SciFiMed Annual Meeting 2024: Highlights from Budapest

The fourth annual SciFiMed meeting in Budapest brought together brilliant minds and cutting-edge research from across Europe to advance our understanding of the complement system. This gathering showcased remarkable progress and collaborative efforts, emphasizing the importance of personalized complement diagnostics and the role of FHR proteins as biomarkers.

The "SciFiMed famliy" in 2024

Key Highlights:

Keynote Lecture: Zoltán Prohászka from the University of Budapest delivered an inspiring introduction on personalized complement diagnostics.

Multiplex Lateral Flow Assays: At the University of Marburg, we demonstrated that FHRs can now be measured in whole blood using multiplex lateral flow assays developed by Microcoat.

Liposome-Based Complement Assay: Antje Baeumner and her team at the University of Regensburg introduced a liposome-based complement assay, a groundbreaking alternative to traditional animal-based lysis assays, adding a new layer of insights into complement research.

Accessible Tools: Hycult Biotech revealed that antibodies and ELISAs for detecting FHRs are now available for researchers everywhere.

Biomarkers in Epidemiological Studies: Felix Poppelaars presented compelling evidence on the potential of FHRs as biomarkers in large-scale epidemiological studies.

FHRs in Eye Tissue: Bert Veuskens presented data showing that FHRs can be measured in human eye tissue, advancing ocular disease research.

FHRs in Urine: Elena Goicoechea de Jorge shared her team's success in measuring FHRs in urine, opening new possibilities for non-invasive diagnostics.

C3 Convertase Formation: Mihály Józsi showcased how FHRs promote the formation of C3 convertase, providing fresh insights into complement regulation.

A special thanks also to Michael Kirschfink, Kyra Gelderman, Moh Daha and Ashley Frazer-Abel for their invaluable contributions as part of our advisory board.

This meeting underscored SciFiMed’s mission to push the boundaries of complement research and foster collaboration among leading experts. Stay connected with us on LinkedIn for more updates as we continue to innovate and explore the world of complement science.

SciFiMed Advisory Board member Ashley Frazer-Abel captured the spirit of our advancements:

"You do not know what you need to measure until you can. Now you can!"
